Facts and figures

The Beacon will be an iconic landmark for Hemel Hempstead and the most sustainable development anywhere in the world.

Sustainability Specifications Residents' amenities

The Beacon's exterior will have the highest density 'solar farm' in the UK. Solar panels are incorporated into the external architecture of the building, creating a 'solar ledge' that wraps around each level of the building, on the outside of the balcony of every apartment.

Rainwater will be collected at the 17th-floor communal roof terrace level, as well as at each solar ledge level to be harvested for flushing toilets, washing clothes and irrigation of the UK's tallest indoor arboretum, keeping the internal air fresh.

Hot water provided by ground source heat pumps placed 400m into the earth.

The Beacon will use 30% less concrete than a standard UK building. The concrete that is used will be produced as near as possible to the site and 35,000 tonnes of excavated chalk and clay will be used to infill non-load-bearing walls in the building, providing dual-layer insulation. The walls and floors will be well-insulated to take away noise.
